Medusa was once the most beautiful Gorgon sister. Poseidon tried to court Medusa and ultimately raped her. When Athena found out she transformed Medusa into a terrifying creature with snakes for hair and a face that turned all who looked at her to stone. Medusa embodies menstruations protective powers.
